Coined by the Academy of the Hebrew Language in 1912, from Aramaicכַּלָּנִיתָא(kallānīṯā, “type of reed”), based on Classical Syriacܟܠܘܢܝܬܐ(kallōnīṯā, “anemone”), both diminutives of כַּלְּתָא(kalləṯā, “bride”). Can be synchronically analyzed as כַּלָּה(kalá, “bride”) +־נִית(-nít).
