Usage notes

This verb phrase has several points to note.

  • As in many languages, the verb is not transitive; its literal translation is closer to "to please", though (with the preposition از (az)) it could be rather loosely translated as "(one's) joy/pleasure comes (from)...". Thus, the element خوش is inflected for possession. For example...
    • a phrase using "I like" requires خوشم (xošam),
    • "he/she likes" requires خوشش (xošaš),
    • "they like" requires خوششان (xošešân), etc.
Simply add the appropriate pronominal suffix.
  • The preposition از (az) marks what in English would be the direct object of the verb "like". See the example sentences above.
