From ناو (nâv) + دان (dân, “water”). From Proto-Iranian (compare Ossetian дон (don, “water, river”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian (compare Avestan [script needed] (dānu-, “river”)[script needed], Sanskrit धुनी (dhuni, “river”)), from Proto-Indo-European *dā- (“fluid; river; to flow”).
