Etymology

Borrowing from French Cambodge and Portuguese Camboja. Both these words are derived from Middle Khmer Kambuja (Modern Khmer, Kampuchea). Ultimately from Sanskrit काम्बोज ‎(kāmboja, “a tribe mentioned in Hindu scripture”).
