Usage notes

The word is often used by the king of Thailand at the end of his signature and almost always abbreviated as ป.ร. ‎(bpɔɔ-rɔɔ), in the same manner as the British monarch signs his or her name with the letter "R" at the end, which stands for Latin rex ‎(“king”) or regina ‎(“queen”).

For example, Bhumibol Adulyadej signed his name as "ภูมิพลอดุลยเดช ป.ร." (puu-mí-pon-à-dun-yá-dèet bpɔɔ-rɔɔ), which might be translated as "Bhumibol Adulyadej R[ex]".

This style of signing was first used by Chulalongkorn (reigned 1868–1910).

There is no Thai word corresponding to the female form, regina.
