ปรมราชาธิราช
ปรมราชาธิราช
Thai
Noun
ปรมราชาธิราช • (bpɔɔ-rom-raa-chaa-tí-râat)
- Alternative form of บรมราชาธิราช (bɔɔ-rom-raa-chaa-tí-râat)
Usage notes
The word is often used by the king of Thailand at the end of his signature and almost always abbreviated as ป.ร. (bpɔɔ-rɔɔ), in the same manner as the British monarch signs his or her name with the letter "R" at the end, which stands for Latin rex (“king”) or regina (“queen”).
For example, Bhumibol Adulyadej signed his name as "ภูมิพลอดุลยเดช ป.ร." (puu-mí-pon-à-dun-yá-dèet bpɔɔ-rɔɔ), which might be translated as "Bhumibol Adulyadej R[ex]".
This style of signing was first used by Chulalongkorn (reigned 1868–1910).
There is no Thai word corresponding to the female form, regina.
