From Pali khetta (“field; plot of land; arable land; site”). Cognate with Sanskrit क्षेत्र (kṣetra, “region; area; field”) (whence Thai เกษตร (gà-sèet, “cultivated land; field”)), Lao ເຂດ (khēt, “area; district; region; territory”), Khmer ខេត្ត (khétt, “province; district; territory”) and possibly Tocharian B keta (“garden-plot; field”).
