Etymology
The left component of this character was originally 幵 (jiān), and this was an ancient name for the Chinese pond heron. The jiān reading comes from the original left component. The left component has been substituted for 开 in both traditional and simplified Chinese. Mainland ornithologists have used this character in naming bitterns and certain other few species of heron, and have given it the reading yán.
