First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as ᄂᆞᆯ개 (Yale: nolkay). Also recorded from the same source, ᄂᆞᆯ애 (nol-ay). A compound of ᄂᆞᆯ— (nol-, “to fly”) (Modern 날— (nal-, “to fly”)) + —개 (-gae, “inanimate agent suffix”).
