First attested in the Yongbi eocheonga (龍飛御天歌 / 용비어천가), 1447, as 마ᅀᆞᆫ (Yale: mazon).

Other Middle Korean forms include 마ᄋᆞᆫ ‎(maon) and 마은 ‎(maun).
