Etymology

From the stem vowel -ե- ‎(-e-) + -ւ- ‎(-w-), which has the same origin as the instrumental marker, namely Proto-Indo-European *-bʰi, +‎ -ին ‎(-in) suffix. Alternatively, and more probably, -ին ‎(-in) may reflect the -i- in Proto-Indo-European *-bʰi followed by a demonstrative element from Proto-Indo-European *-no- > -ն ‎(-n). Compare -ովին ‎(-ovin).
