Akin to Old Norse -stó ‎(“place of”), Old Frisian stō ‎(“place”), Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐍉𐌾𐌰𐌽 ‎(stōjan, “to judge, place”). Confer the similar usage in forming toponyms in the cognate Indo-Iranian suffix -stan.
