Etymology

From Persian اهواز ‎(Ahvâz), from Arabic أَهْوَاز ‎(ʾahwāz) and اَلْأَهْوَاز ‎(al-ʾahwāz), a shortened form of سُوق الْأَهْوَاز ‎(sūq al-ʾahwāz), a calque of Middle Persian Hūǰestān-vāčār ‎(literally “the market of Khuzestan”), name of a major town in Sassanian-era Khuzestan; see Khuzestan for more.
