Borrowing from Frenchauberge. The term is attested in the fifteenth century as Frenchauberge, a loan from a term attested in eleventh century Old Provençalalberga(“camp, hut”), derived from albergar(“to host”). The term originated in Frankish*heriberga, from Proto-Germanic*harjabergō(“housing, house (army)”), composed of the elements *harjaz(“army”) (compare GermanHeer) and *berganą(“to shelter, to protect”), whence German bergen.
