From Middle High German hōde, from Old High German hodo, from Proto-Germanic *huþōn, from Proto-Indo-European *skeu(t)- (“cover”). Cognate with Welsh cwd (“scrotum”), Greek σκυ̃τος (skỹtos, “hide, leather”), Latin cutis (“skin”), Old Lithuanian kutỹs Beutel, German Haut, Scheune, Schote etc.
