Usage notes

This way of spelling is based on transliteration of the Russian spelling Кишинёв. In Moldavian, which is the national language of Moldova and practically the same as Romanian, the name is spelled Кишинэу. This may be transliterated in English texts as Chişinău or simply Chisinau, which may be regarded as an "official" way of spelling the name in English on the grounds that it is used by the US government.
