From Middle High German kupfe, from Old High German kupfa ‎(“cap, bonnet”), probably from Late Latin cuppa ‎(“cup”). The modern consonantism is Central and Low German; compare Middle Low German koppe. Cognate with Dutch kop ‎(“cup; head”), English cup. Related also with Kopf ‎(“head”).
