From Old Norse miðr (“middle”) + garðr (“enclosure, yard”) or directly from Proto-Germanic *midjagardaz (“middle enclosure, middle-earth”). Cognate with Old English Middangeard, Old Saxon Middilgard, Old High German Mittilagart, Gothic 𐌼𐌹𐌳𐌾𐌿𐌽𐌲𐌰𐍂𐌳𐍃 (Midjungards).
