Molotovin is the genitive form of the last name of Vyacheslav Molotov, the Soviet minister of foreign affairs during talvisota(“the Fenno-Soviet Winter War in 1939–40”), and koktaili is a Finnicized dialectal modification of cocktail. Molotovin koktaili is thus a “cocktail intended for Molotov”. Vilho Heinämies is the first known person to use the term in print in an article on Aug 4th 1941 in Helsingin Sanomat titled "'Molotovin koktailia' Hangon rintaman ryssille" ("Molotov cocktail served for the Russians at Hanko front"). The term "Molotov cocktail" had appeared already earlier in English-language reporting of the Winter War, but it is likely to be a translation from Finnish (David L. Gold, Studies in Etymology and Etiology, University of Alicante 2009, pp. 205 - 230).
