1. the third Tuesday of September, when the Dutch monarch rides festively in a golden (i.e. gilded) coach to the staten-generaal (literally 'states-general', the upper house of parliament) to hold the troonrede ('throne speech'), announcing the government policy for the coming parliamentary session.
