From Proto-Finnic *salmi, from Proto-Uralic. Cognates include Northern Sami čoalbmi (“narrow in lake”)[1], Skolt Sami čuäˊlmm (“sound, narrows”)[2] and possibly Udmurt сюм (sjum, “bay, cove”)[3]. Finnish dialectal jolma is a Saami loan[4].
