Etymology

From Middle High German öle, ole, olei, olge, from Old High German oli, from Latin oleum, from Ancient Greek ἔλαιον ‎(élaion). Like some of the Middle High German forms, Luxembourgish shows lack of umlaut (possibly due to continued Latin influence) and a gliding sound g (compare also Old Dutch olig).
