Etymology

Fom Old Catalan a Déu siau, from earlier a Déu siatz ‎(“be with God”), whose modern equivalent would be amb Déu sigueu. The plural forms imply the use of the archaic formal pronoun vós. The original verb has lost its imperative meaning. See also adéu.
