Etymology

From Vulgar Latin root *amendoi < ambi dui, from Latin ambō ‎(“both”) + dui, duae, from duo ‎(“two”). CompareRomanian amândoi. Cf. also Old Italian amendue, Engadine amenduos, Old French andui, Occitan amdui.
