From Proto-Germanic *and- + *ūstrōną ‎(“to strive”), the latter from Proto-Germanic *ūstrį̄, *ūstrī- ‎(“diligence, eagerness, zeal”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ews- ‎(“to burn”).
