Etymology

Borrowing from Basque akelarre, a composed of aker ‎(“male goat”) and larre ‎(“meadow”). Some researchers say the original word was alkalarre, from alka ‎(“Spanish kind of cocksfoot”), akelarre being a form corrupted by the Church.
