From Middle Welsh ascurn, ascwrn, from Proto-Celtic *astkornu (compare Cornish/Breton askorn), compound of *ast- (“bone”) (more at ais) and *kornu (“horn”) (compare Middle Welsh cyrn (“horns”), Old Irish corn), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱr̥nom (compare Latin cornū, English horn).
