From Proto-Germanic *budnaz, *budną ‎(“ground”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰudʰn-, *bʰudʰm- ‎(“earth, bottom”). Cognate with Old Frisian boden ‎(“ground”), Old High German bodam ‎(“ground, floor”), Old Norse botn ‎(“floor, ground”), Old English botm ‎(“bottom”).
