From Middle Dutch brine, from Old Dutch *brīni, from Proto-Germanic *brīniją, *brīną, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *mrīno- ‎(“salt, sea”), from *móri ‎(“sea”). Compare Latin marīnus ‎(“of the sea, marine”).
