Etymology

Of unclear origin. Apparently from the dialectal term burgood ‎(“yeast”). Perhaps ultimately from Welsh burym ‎(“yeast”) + cawl ‎(“cabbage, gruel”),[1] or perhaps from Arabic.[2]
