Perhaps from Nahuatl chiltotl, chīltōtōtl (“brightly-coloured bird”), from chīlli + tōtōtl; compare chiltic, chīchīltic (“the colour red”).
Alternatively, perhaps from chilli (“chili, pepper”) + tomatl (“tomatillo”).[1]
