coutume f (plural coutumes)
From Old French coustume, from a Vulgar Latin contraction of Latin cōnsuētūdinem, accustive of cōnsuētūdō (“custom”), from cōnsuēscō (“accustom, habituate; accustom oneself”), itself from con- (“with”) + suēscō (“become used or accustomed; accustom, train”). Compare also Medieval Latin costuma. Cognate with costumbre in Spanish, costum in Catalan and costume in English, Portuguese and Italian.
