Definition 2024
cycen
cycen
Old English
Noun
cyċen f
- Alternative form of cycene
Etymology 2
Precise development uncertain, but probably a diminutive form of cocc (from a reconstructed Old English form *cuc(c) “fowl” + diminutive ending *-in) or from Proto-Germanic *kiukīną. Compare Low German kiken, Middle Dutch kieken, Middle High German kūchelīn (German Küchlein). More at cocc, -en. Lack of palatalization of the second c is unexpected.
