Compound formation of dham, Gheg variant of dhëmb (“tooth”) + pir, participle of pi (“to drink”), literally meaning 'that who drinks through his/her teeth'.
Alternatively, Skok lists it as a borrowing from Serbo-Croatian vàmpīr, from Proto-Slavic *ǫpyrь.
