From Proto-Albanian *dersa, from Proto-Indo-European *ĝhersos, compare Ancient Greek χέρσος (khérsos, “dry land”)[2]. Alternatively from earlier *ndjerr, Proto-Albanian *ən-tersa, from Proto-Indo-European *ters- 'to dry (up)'. Compare Latin torreo (“to dry”), Gothic 𐌸𐌰𐌿𐍂𐍃𐌿𐍃 (þaursus), Old High German durri arid, dry.
