Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *dreuganą. Cognate with Gothic 𐌳𐍂𐌹𐌿𐌲𐌰𐌽 ‎(driugan, “do military service”), Old English drēogan and Old Norse drýgja ‎(“perform, practise”).

Pronunciation

• Possibly IPA^(key): /ˈdrioɣɑn/, but the spelling with ⟨io⟩ is comparably rare, so that it is not certain whether it might merely be a spelling convention copied from Old Dutch and Old High German or indeed an older stage of the language.
