   cietumnieks izlauza loga dzelžus‎ ― the prisoner broke the window irons (= bars)

   zēns vāca no pelnu čupām mazāk apdegušās naglas un citus dzelžus‎ ― the boy collected less burned nails and other iron objects from the piles of ashes

2. fetters, shackles

   roku dzelži‎ ― handcuffs (lit. hand irons, shackles)

   uzlikt arestētajam roku dzelžus‎ ― to put handcuffs on the prisoner

   slēgt dzelžos‎ ― to put on arm, leg shackles

3. (on a horse) bit, bridle

   izņemt zirgam dzelžus no mutes‎ ― to remove the bit from the horse's mouth
