From Proto-Germanic *farhaz ‎(“boar”), from Proto-Indo-European *pórḱos. Cognate with Old High German farah (German Ferkel), Old Saxon *farh (Dutch varken); and with Latin porcus, Ancient Greek πόρκος ‎(pórkos).
