From Proto-Germanic*fijandz, originally a present participle of *fijaną(“to hate”) ( > Old English fēogean). Cognate with Old Frisian fīand (West Frisian fijân), Old Saxon fīond, fīand (Low German Feend, Fiend), Dutch vijand, Old High German fīant (German Feind), Old Norse fjándi (Danish fjende, Swedish fiende, Icelandic fjandi), Gothic 𐍆𐌹𐌾𐌰𐌽𐌳𐍃(fijands).
