From Old Latin forctis, fortis, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerǵʰ- (“to rise, high, hill”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬠𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬀𐬧𐬝 (bərəzaṇt̰), Sanskrit बर्हयति (barhayati, “to invigorate”) and Old English burg (English borough).
