Etymology

From gúrka ‎(“cucumber”) + tíð ‎(“period, time”). Literally meaning "cucumber period" or "a time of cucumbers." From the synonymous Danish term agurketid which is from German term Sauregurkenzeit (Zeit meaning "time", sauer meaning "sour" and Gurken meaning "cucumber").

This refers to the time of summer when pickles were ripening and were put in a sour solution, and at the same time business hit a low and vacation and free time hit a new high. On that time there were few things to report on.
