From Vulgar Latin *vulpiclus < Late Latin *vulpīculus (with some uncertain Germanic influence on the initial v), diminutive of classical Latin vulpēs. Compare goupille. See also Romansh golp, Galician golpe, Portuguese golpelha, Spanish vulpeja.
