1. his, her; used with the possessive suffix -nsa/-nsä appended to the main word owned

   Hänen äitinsä on 45 -vuotias.

   His/Her mother is 45 years old.

2. his, hers (that which belongs to him or her, used without a following noun)

   Tämä kirja on hänen.

   This book is his/hers.

3. he, she; with monopersonal verbs which require genitive, such as pitää, täytyä, tulla, olla + passive present participle etc.

   Hänen pitää/täytyy/tulee tehdä / on tehtävä tämä nyt.

   He/She has to do this now.

Usage notes

In spoken language the possessive suffix -nsa|-nsä is often omitted.
