1. to hold out (with the hand etc.)

   Er hielt ihr das Geld hin, doch sie nahm es nicht.‎

   He held the money out for her, but she didn’t take it.

2. to stall (employ delaying tactics against)

   Versuch du, sie irgendwie hinzuhalten, während ich versuche, durch die Hintertür zu fliehen.‎

   You try to stall her somehow while I try to escape out the back door.
