Etymology

From homō ‎(“man”) + hominī ‎(“to man”) the dative of homō + lupus ‎(“a wolf”). Literally meaning "man is a wolf to man". Compare the Icelandic maður er manns gaman ‎(“man is the enjoyment of man”).
