Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *hrapjaną ‎(“to touch, scratch”), from Proto-Indo-European *ker-, *sker- ‎(“to twist, bend”). Cognate with Old Frisian hreppa ‎(“to move”), Old Norse hreppa ‎(“to grasp, obtain”). Related to Old English hrēpan ‎(“to touch”).
