1. (politics) Currently ruling; being the present controlling authority, as of a government or country.

   He's now in power at City Hall.

   The party in power here is always the Democrats.

Usage notes

• This expression is ordinarily used to refer specifically to possession of political power. The term in charge is used more broadly, to refer to possession of any position of decision-making authority.
