From Proto-Germanic *langatīnaz (“lengthening, spring”), from *langaz (“long”) + *tīnaz (“day”). Akin to Old Saxon lentin, Old Dutch lentin (Dutch lente), Old High German lengizen, lenzin (German Lenz). Compare also Gothic 𐍃𐌹𐌽𐍄𐌴𐌹𐌽𐍃 (“daily”).
