From Old Portuguese marfil, almafi, almafil, from Arabic عَظْم اَلْفِيل (ʿaẓm al-fīl, “elephant-bone”), from عَظْم (ʿaẓm, “bone”) + فِيل (fīl, “elephant”). Compare Galician, Spanish and Catalan marfil.
