Etymology

From older *niust, whence also Central Franconian nüüs, neist, and possibly (but improbably) East Central German nischt. Of somewhat unstraightforward origin, but eventually probably from Old High German niowiht, whence also net ‎(“not”) and German nicht, nichts.
