Etymology
From Proto-Germanic*newun, from Proto-Indo-European*h₁néwn̥(“nine”). Cognate with Old Frisian nigun (West Frisian njoggen), Old Saxon nigun (Dutch negen), together representing a variant of the original Germanic (with /g/ for /w/), seen in Old High German niun (German neun), Old Norse níu (Swedish nio), Gothic 𐌽𐌹𐌿𐌽. The IE source also led to Latin novem, Albanian nëntë, Old Irish nōi (Irish naoi), Old Slavic devęt’ (Russian девять).
